Tips for Keeping a Boat in a Storage Facility

When summer fades into cooler months and you decide it's time to give your boat a rest until the next year, you might consider renting a storage unit to keep it safe. If the boat you own corresponds to a storage unit that can accommodate its size (anything, for example, between ten and thirty feet depending on where you rent), you may this is a safe and protective alternative to keeping your boat on blocks outside. A boat cover, while protective of the exterior, may not always be the safest bet in rough winter weather. If you're able to afford indoor storage, take advantage of it, and be mindful of the best way to keep your boat stored.

As you prepare to bring your boat to the storage unit, take heed of these tips to help maintain it's structure and cleanliness when you're not using it.

1) First, you may want to give consideration to a storage facility that specializes in boat storage. They will likely offer units sized accordingly, with temperature controlled rooms to keep out mold and bugs. Ask friends who have stored boats for recommendations.

2) Naturally, make sure the boat is as dry as possible, and clean out the interior. Anything you can do to decrease the risk of bacterial growth, mildew, or attracting bugs helps.

3) Make sure the fuel tank - if your boat has one - is completely empty. Leaving gas in a tank for a long period of time can ruin the engine, possibly rendering it useless when its time to retrieve the boat.

4) Use a cover for the boat inside the unit. This helps prevent moisture from collecting on the surface, and in turn ruining any fabric on seating and other surfaces.

5) Place boxes of baking soda or a similar odor absorbing product around the boat in order to prevent unpleasant aromas. You definitely don't want to retrieve your boat come spring and discover an unbearable smell! It's important, too, to check on your boat periodically while it's in storage to make sure everything looks okay.

Proper boat storage can help keep your recreational water vehicle safe and sound during the off-reason, and raring to go when the sun comes out again. Owning a boat requires great responsibility, and if you want to keep your investment looking and running its best, indoor storage is a great way to keep it looking like new.
